Reader Discussion: What Are Your Favorite PC Game Modifications Of All Time?

by Javy Gwaltney on Jan 16, 2016 at 08:55 AM

We had a reader discussion a while back asking if you used mods. Since it's clear that a lot of you do, let's take a step further today, yeah?

A lot of my childhood was actually spent navigating the various dotcoms of the internet in search of mods for the original Half-life. There weren't really any sites out there that functioned like NexusMods does, as  a nearly all-encompassing database containing mods and download links to them. Back then you had to search across hundreds of poorly made sites to find and download them. It was a headache, really, but one well worth the effort whenever you found a great, creative modification.

My personal favorites? I honestly couldn't pick between Neil Manke's USS Darkstar and They Hunger. Both total conversion mods that felt like completely different games from the core Half-life experience. Darkstar situated you on a starship where you had to fight off aliens while They Hunger had you playing as someone trying to survive a zombie-infested countryside. Even now, years later, They Hunger is still an impressive piece of work.

So, what about you? Do you play Counter-strike? More of a Dota person? Do you flap about as a deadly pigeon in Grand Theft Auto V or load up some wacky WADs for DOOM? Let us know!
