New Halo 5: Guardians Map Shown, Designed For eSports Play

by Andrew Reiner on Aug 04, 2015 at 05:26 AM

At today's Xbox Gamescom briefing, Microsoft didn't focus on Halo 5: Guardians' single-player campaign or new massive Warzone multiplayer mode. We instead got a look at the game's eSports functionality, and a new map called Coliseum. Microsoft brought two shoutcasters on stage to setup a Halo 5: Guardians 4v4 match between OpTic Gaming and Epsilon Sports.

The shoutcasters detailed Coliseum as a symmetrical map with short sight lines and fast combat. OpTic and Epsilon faced off in a best of three series in Capture the Flag. We're shown highlights of the final round, which features a wide variety of weapon play and special moves. The ground pound, and slide are used often, as is the sprint, jump, toss the flag move to cover ground faster. The map offers some nice verticality which OpTic uses to take down a few Epsilon opponents, but their efforts are not enough in the end. The match goes to Epsilon. Each member of Epsilon walked away with a limited edition Halo 5: Guardians-themed 1 TB Xbox One with matching controller. This console will eventually be made available to the public and can be pre-ordered today.

At the end of the Halo 5: Guardians presentation, 343 Industries' Josh Holmes announced a Halo 5: Guardians World Championship is coming this winter with over $1 million in prizes.
