This Week In Mobile: Trim Trees, Take Up Pole Vaulting, And Revisit A Classic

by Alissa McAloon on Jul 24, 2015 at 01:00 PM

The top new mobile games this week have a lot of variety. Pac-Man fans will be happy to see a familiar game back on the market, this time without in-app purchases. Those looking for a relaxing puzzle game should take a look at Prune, while someone in the market for the opposite will love the quirky runner Vault. If none of those are  your speed, maybe a Adventure Time and Puzzle Quest crossover will do the trick.

Prune
Developer: Polyculture
Platform(s): iOS
Price:  $3.99

In Prune, players must help a small sapling grow and blossom into a beautiful tree by trimming its branches to protect it from obstacles and guide it towards the sunlight. The minimalist, silhouetted design and simple controls make it easy to pick up while a progressive increase in difficulty adds a perfect level of challenge to the experience.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
Developer: Bandai Namco
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Price: $4.99

You may have already seen this game in an App Store as a FTP title back in September, but this newest rendition of Pac-Man Championship Edition DX does away with the in-app purchases. It also aims to offer an experience similar to the console game of the same name. Pac-Man championship Edition DX features five game modes, ten zone layouts, and over 100 stages to munch fruit and chase ghosts across.

Adventure Time: Puzzle Quest
Developer: WayForward
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Price: Free (in-app purchases)

Adventure Time: Puzzle Quest merges turn-based combat with match-three puzzles for a surprisingly fun dungeon crawl. Players control a party of up to three Adventure Time characters as they complete quests and win loot by matching three or more like-colored stones on a grid. The game puts a very distinct Adventure Time spin on the genre through character specific special moves and a quirky crafting system.

Vault
Developer: Nitrome
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Price: Free (ads and in-app purchases)

Unlike other games about vaults, Vault puts players in control of a comical little pole-vaulter  as he tries to propel himself over gaps and collect coins in an obstacle-ridden landscape. Styled much like an endless runner, players tap the screen to vault into the air, hopefully clearing pits and walls while doing so. The vaulting mechanic takes a little getting used to, but once you get it down you’ll be setting records and unlocking characters in no time.
