Despite Failed Kickstarter, Mutant Football League Is Still In Development

by Mike Futter on Jan 19, 2015 at 08:00 AM

Mutant Football League had a rough go on Kickstarter, raising only $141,821 of its $750,000 goal in 2013. “"We will be back my friends. Not sure how, when,.. but were coming,” said creator Michael Mendheim at the time. Now, we have our first look at the game in action.

Mutant Football League is a reimagining of the Genesis title, Mutant League Football, led by the person who created that 16-bit classic. The pre-alpha footage below was published to YouTube on January 3. It’s still extremely early, but does show some of the monsters in action, along with play calling, and NFL Blitz-style post-play aggressiveness.

For more on Mutant Football League, you can check out an interview with Mendheim that ran in the October 2013 issue of Game Informer. The title was originally planned for release in September 2014 on iOS and July 2015 for Xbox Live. Digital Dreams says it hopes to release the title at the end of 2015.

Our Take
It’s odd that Digital Dreams didn’t push this out to the media, as the initial Kickstarter drew attention. Given that the crowdfunding effort petered out, it’s likely that the project is progressing slowly. I hope we one day see it come to fruition, but until there’s something a bit more substantial, I’m remaining cautiously optimistic.
