Civilization: Beyond Earth Coming To Mac, Linux This Holiday

by Mike Futter on Oct 21, 2014 at 06:15 AM

We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Civilization: Beyond Earth is coming to Mac and Linux. The bad news is that it won’t be this week alongside the PC release.

Aspyr Media, which has handled the ports of a number of recent 2K titles, is bringing Beyond Earth to Mac and Linux this holiday. The title will be playable cross-platform, so you’ll be able to engage in multiplayer matches with your friends on PC. It will also be eligible for Steamplay once Beyond Earth is on Mac and Linux, so if you purchase on PC, you'll be able to continue playing on one of the other two without purchasing another copy.

The feature set will be identical, and pre-orders (with the Exoplanets Map pack) are available on Aspyr’s Gameagent website. For more on Civilization: Beyond Earth, check out our coverage from Gamescom.

Our Take
As someone who used to be restricted to Mac gaming, I know the pain of having to wait for later ports (especially when they are Civilization games). It’s an improvement from the old days when there weren’t many games on Mac at all, though.
