We've seen a lot of Civilization: Beyond Earth already, but most of what’s been revealed has been early game fare - Settling a colony, taking on some baby aliens, discovery and exploration.

At Gamescom 2014 we witnessed a late-game colony take on some serious aliens and engage in full-scale war.

Some late-game resource acquisition was on display, fantastic boosts to “city tiles” but expensive to construct. Satellite tech was also showcased - From buffing units to blowing away enemies, satellite systems will allow players to destroy enemies from the sky or influence the tide of combat.

We witness some mid-to-high tier ships engage with a massive water-dwelling alien known as a kraken - The beast took quite a bit of punishment from both sea vessels and aerial units before being destroyed. If you upset Beyond Earth’s take on the barbarian faction from other franchise offerings, expect them to send some of these nasty creatures your way.

The aliens in Beyond Earth are not mindless assailants like the barbarians and will form diplomacy ratings toward players in the game based on their actions. We can assume that killing the kraken has annoyed the aliens and they’ll be looking for some payback.

We also got to see a few huge endgame units - A giant mech-style war machine and an incredibly huge ship with racks and racks of missiles and guns. The punishment these units can dish out is tremendous, and battles featuring them are likely to be fast and decisive.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on all the aliens and artillery when Civilization:Beyond Earth hits on October 24.
