Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Wants To Make A Ballet Game

by Mike Futter on Sep 01, 2014 at 06:17 AM

Yesterday, I had the chance to interview Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi about his new mobile game, Terra Battle. As he was demonstrating the game's swirling, graceful combat system, I asked him how long it took to refine it before he was happy. The answer was much more interesting than I would have ever guessed.

Terra Battle has been in development for fourteen months, and it took Sakaguchi and his team about three months to figure out how to create something that works for mobile platforms. The Terra Battle system has roots in something entirely different.

"I want to make a ballet dance game," Sakaguchi told me. He had created an entire pitch for the title and even took his team to Paris on a research trip.

With Terra Battle nearing release, Sakaguchi says that he hasn't completely abandoned the idea. "It may still be my next game," he says. So, if you happen to download Terra Battle when it's released in October, keep Sakaguchi's prima ballerina dreams in mind as you dance your finger across your touchscreen.
