Clint Hocking Departs Valve

by Mike Futter on Jan 05, 2014 at 02:26 PM

Clint Hocking, game director on the original Splinter Cell and creative director on Far Cry 2, has left Valve. Hocking’s LinkedIn profile reflects the change in employment, and the “about” section of his personal blog confirms the departure.

Hocking was employed at Ubisoft until May 2010, citing a feeling of being “too comfortable.” He then joined LucasArts, taking a job as creative director. While at the now defunct publisher, he served as creative director on an unannounced project.

Hocking departed for Valve in July 2012. According to his blog, he left at the end of 2013. It’s unclear what project was working on during his year and a half at the Half-Life developer, though his website says he was working as a designer and level designer.

Hocking currently writes a monthly column for Edge Magazine. We’ve reached out to him to find out what he’s working on next.

Thanks to Mitch for the tip.

Our Take
Splinter Cell introduced a number of innovations, playing with light and shadow in a way that broadened our understanding of what stealth games could be. While we haven’t heard much about Hocking’s projects at LucasArts or Valve, I am very interested to find out what he’s working on next.
