Godus Headed To Steam Early Access

by Matt Bertz on Aug 30, 2013 at 08:30 AM

Peter Molyneux's return to god gaming is nearly upon us. On September 13, a Steam early access version of Godus is launching to the world.

Molyneux's studio, 22 Cans, announced the game last November, and raised nearly $750,000 for the project by its December 21 Kickstarter funding deadline. The game places players in the role of a minor deity, who must terraform the land to make it more hospitable for his or her believers.

When the other 22 Cans project, Curiosity, came to a close last May, Molyneux revealed that winning player Bryan Henderson would be given the role "god of all gods" when the game launched. Today Molyneux revealed this will be a six month reign, after which another player can challenge him to a multiplayer battle. If Henderson is dethroned, the new god of all gods will have three months of uncontested supremacy before another can challenge him or her. Whoever is in the position of the god of all gods earns a cut of the royalties from game sales.

Godus is slated to eventually release on PC, Mac, Android, and iOS. Check out the new trailer below.

Our Take
It's nice to see another high-profile Kickstarter game on the cusp of release. Molyneux has often been derided by critics for over-promising and under-delivering, but we're excited to see what he can accomplish by returning to a genre he essentially gave birth to with Populous.
