Sony Accidentally Leaks Grand Theft Auto V Assets Early

by Kyle Hilliard on Aug 24, 2013 at 12:23 PM

Assorted gaming focused websites and message boards have been posting new assets and possible spoilers for Grand Theft Auto V. These assets were available briefly to European GTA V digital pre-order customers through the PlayStation 3. Sony has fixed the error, and issued an apology to both Rockstar Games and GTA fans. You can check out the statement from Sony below, as it appears on the PlayStation Blog:

Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets. These assets were posted online. We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content. GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we’re looking forward to a historic launch on September 17.

It's unclear exactly what leaked, so just tread carefully while exploring the Internet (useful advice even when GTA secrets aren't online) if you're looking to avoid spoilers.

For the most recent batch of Rockstar approved GTA V assets, head here. GTA V is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17.

Our Take
It's always disappointing when leaks like this occur, especially for games with quality stories whose impact can be hindered by discovering story beats early. I would certainly consider Grand Theft Auto to be one of those games. I apologize that I am not able to offer more details on the content of the leak, but I don't want to know what it was that escaped.
