Video Games Live To Stream Concert On Twitch Tonight

by Mike Futter on Jul 20, 2013 at 04:25 AM

Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall's Video Games Live has been bringing compelling video game music to arenas and concert halls around the country since 2005. Until now, seeing a live performance meant being in the right city at the right time (with a ticket in hand, of course). Recorded performances are available in audio and video of course, but it isn't the same. Later this week, you'll be able to watch a Video Games Live concert from your own home.

The concert, in partnership with Twitch, presented by Amazon Video Games, and sponsored by Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, will begin at 6 pm Pacific on Saturday July 20. This event will be the world premiere for a number of new pieces, including music from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Destiny, and Dota 2. If you've got an Xbox 360 with a surround sound system, now might be a good time to test out the Twitch app on the dashboard.

Other selections include music from the Final Fantasy series, Street Fighter II, Skyrim, Journey, and Castlevania. In addition to the concert, a pre-show will be available with the following schedule:

  • 6:00pm: Gerard Marino, Composer God of War [guest musician]
  • 6:10pm: Tim Larkin, Composer Dota 2 (Valve) [guest conductor]
  • 6:20pm: Austin Wintory, Grammy nominated composer of Journey [guest conductor]
  • 6:30pm: Emmanuel Fratianni, Video game/film/TV composer & principle conductor of Video Games Live
  • 6:40pm: Jillian Aversa:  Vocalist (Halo, God of War, Civilization, Soul Calibur) [vocal soloist]
  • 6:50pm: Clint Bajakian & Peter McConnell, original LucasArts composers [guest musicians]
  • 7:00pm: Eimear Noone, Conductor of Diablo III and Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses [guest conductor]
  • 7:10pm: Russell Brower, Audio Director, Composer - Blizzard Entertainment [guest conductor]
  • 7:20pm: Brian Tyler:  Film composer & composer of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag [guest conductor]
  • 7:30pm: Marty O'Donnell & Mike Salvatori, Halo & Destiny [guest conductors]
  • 7:40pm: David Hayter, voice of the original Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid 1 - 4
  • 7:50pm: Costume Contest
  • 8:00pm - 9:00pm: Video Games Live - Act I
  • 9:00pm - 9:15: Tommy Tallarico, Video game composer & Creator/Producer/Host of Video Games Live
  • 9:20pm - 10:30pm: Video Games Live - Act II

If you aren't familiar with Video Games Live, you can purchase the first two volumes on iTunes or Amazon. You can also check out our behind the scenes video from April 2011 to see all of the work that goes into making Video Games Live happen.

Additionally, you can tune in at 4 PM to see Saints Row IV on the same channel. Volition's Steve Jaros and acclaimed voice actor Troy Baker will be on hand. If you want to know why it might be a good idea to watch, check out our preview of the game's first few hours

The concert is over, but you can re-watch it here.

Our Take
I have amassed a large collection of video game soundtracks, and the Video Games Live albums are among my favorite. I will be watching this via the Twitch app on my Xbox 360 pumped through my surround sound system. It won't be the same as being there, but it's still going to sound amazing. This event is not to be missed.
