Microsoft announced it signed a deal with cloud streaming company Agawi to bring cloud-based gaming to Windows 8 using the Windows Azure platform. This move allows the streaming of Facebook social and mid-core games, web-based MMOs and PC core games, according to Microsoft.

"Game developers want to focus on building great games, not worrying about back-end issues like scalability and platform management,” Microsoft VP Walid Abu-Hadba says. The company says other AAA games will be made available "in the coming months" for instant play on Windows 8 devices.

Earlier this year, Sony purchased its own cloud-based gaming company Gaikai.
