Why is the rediscovery of the Prince of Persia source code so important? Its creator makes the case.

Aficionados of video game history will want to check out a new blog entry from Jordan Mechner. Following up on the story that the Prince of Persia source code had been found after being missing for at least ten years, Mechner now takes the opportunity to explain the significance of the discovery. 

For people who don't create games or program for a living, it's an object lesson in the impermanence of digital data, and the event should act as a wake-up call for historians; some of the early foundational work of video gaming may be lost to history without prompt attention.
