Jordan Mechner Discovers Prince Of Persia Source Code

After a ten-year search, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has finally discovered the original Apple II Source code for Prince of Persia.

Mechner recently blogged about his discovery, explaining how he found the discs containing the code in an old box his father sent him after doing some spring cleaning. Side note: Mechner’s father, Francis Mechner, was the composer for both Karateka and the original Prince of Persia.

Mechner claims that he will soon begin working to transfer the 3.5″ Apple ProDOS disks onto a MacBook Air and adapt them to a modern format. You can follow his progress on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Wow, that's pretty cool.
  • Cool. It's impressive for him to find it by such an unusual way... by a box his father sent him with some old forgotten stuff, haha. Who would've guessed, huh?
  • Congrats.
  • Cool!

  • No....I just find "memories" in my old boxes. No game codes for me. I did find a " toy " once that vibrated. Man, I got in trouble for digging in those old boxes.
  • nicee *** myy man

  • Pretty neat story. I've seen speedruns of both Karateka and Prince of Persia, and both of them look quite difficult but I'm sure I'd still enjoy at least PoP.
  • Will Mods of Persia be made?
  • How do you lose a source code? I mean, it's not like losing a box of doughnuts. If anybody gets that reference I'll be their best friend forever.
  • That's really awesome, and after searching for them for ten years! I gotta give him credit for that.

  • That took a long time i bet he was so happy when he got them.
  • Way cool. "The Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Discs." Would like to see it rereleased at some point.

  • Cool, loved that game...
  • I'm surprised it took as long as it did. You'd think it be saved in a protected file somewhere.
  • lol thats awesome

  • I thought they were listing bad movies that Jake Gyllenhal did...
  • we need a new prince of persia...
  • I love stories like this. When someone finds something that basically appears to not exist, it makes it seem like their are still hidden treasures in the world.
  • Pretty sweet
