Blizzard Not Surprised Star Wars: The Old Republic Making Inroads On WoW

by Matthew Kato on Mar 20, 2012 at 04:58 AM

Everyone is trying to get a slice of the MMO pie, and Activision Blizzard knows this has an effect on World of Warcraft. Recently one of the game's developers gave a nod to the competition coming from BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"Of course people are trying Star Wars – our development team are trying Star Wars," said John Lagrave, WoW senior producer, to Eurogamer. "I'm one of the few people who's still playing it actually, but yeah we've seen a dip in subs."

Late last year, Activision Blizzard reported a continued drop in WoW sub numbers, while EA says that two million people have purchased The Old Republic.

Regardless, WoW still has bigger numbers, and Lagrave says that the upcoming Mists of Pandaria should help WoW. "It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, [but] it's also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it's not surprising."

Then again, Mists of Pandaria also introduces Pandas, so there are some who certainly aren't excited about that.
