UPDATE: Minecraft Creator Wants To Help Pay For Psychonauts 2

by Phil Kollar on Feb 07, 2012 at 10:45 AM

UPDATE 2: The saga continues! Notch has sent out a few more tweets explaining what's going on. According to the Minecraft creator, he's been talking to Tim Schafer via e-mail, and it sounds like the two are planning to meet up at GDC. However, Notch cautions, "Anyway, please don't get your hopes too high yet. Everything is extremely vague!" He's probably right, but I'm going to go ahead and get my hopes up anyway.

Meanwhile, Tim Schafer has confirmed to Kotaku that the Psychonauts sequel "could happen," saying, "I have found funding on Twitter before."

UPDATE 1: Double fine has released the following official statement to Giant Bomb: "Tim and Markus are talking. Who knows what might happen?"

ORIGINAL STORY: Many hardcore fans of Double Fine have spent years begging for a sequel to Psychonauts, the cult classic, mind-bending platformer that sold terribly. Though Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer has also expressed the desire to do a sequel, it has seemed unlikely, but things could be turning around thanks to a surprise source.

Following reports that Schafer had pitched Psychonauts 2 to several publishers but found no one interested in funding the game, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson sent a very tiny but potentially very exciting tweet to Schafer: "Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen." In a later tweet, Notch clarified, "I'm serious."

So far Schafer hasn't commented much beyond calling the situation "interesting." So could anything actually come of this light-hearted Twitter banter? Notch has been incredibly successful with Minecraft and is theoretically sitting on a lot of money, although it's unclear if it's enough to fully fund the development of a game. Perhaps it could be enough to push Double Fine in that direction, though?
