Two Worlds II's Expansion As Viewed By Two People Who Loved The Game

by Phil Kollar on Aug 19, 2011 at 09:16 AM

Two Worlds II surprised me by being quite enjoyable when it released earlier this year. Now a downloadable add-on is coming out, and both Jeff Cork and I checked it out today at Gamescom. Here are our thoughts.

Phil's Take: What I loved about Two Worlds II was its very strange sense of humor, and thankfully that seems to be carrying over quite nicely to the Pirates of the Flying Fortress add-on. The last area Topware showed off in our demo was an undead bar – a ghastly hangout for zombies, skeletons, and mummies.

Topware told us that this area will serve as a hub for a number of colorful quests, such as fetching a brain for a zombie to munch on or a thigh muscle that allows one undead stranger to run as he once did as a human. Once you've accomplished all of these tasks, your hero is given a “proof of death” certificate.

The reward for holding this certificate? The hero gains access to the zombie dance club. In this area, you can watch a group of ghouls gyrating. The main character even lets out a laugh-out-loud “Shake it, baby” upon seeing the decomposing dancers. This goofy scenario put a grin on my face, and that's what I loved about the main quest of Two Worlds II. Here's hoping there's plenty more situations that will have me smiling.

Jeff's Take: Phil pretty much nailed my thoughts. Dang it. Fortunately, there's more to talk about than zombie strippers and ale-quaffing skeletons.

I'll cover the boring stuff, since Phil touched on the silly stuff. TopWare says that when the expansion ships, it'll be pulling back all of the existing copies of Two Worlds II and replacing them with Two Worlds II: Velvet Game of the Year Edition. It'll be priced identically, but will contain the additional content from Pirates of the Flying Fortress.

TopWare says that developer Reality Pump made some improvements to the graphics engine, which will trickle down to Two Worlds II, also. In other words, players will be able to download a patch on PC and consoles that will improve environmental textures and clothing in Two Worlds II at no cost. Not too shabby.

Look, I get it. Those two things aren't nearly as interesting as a pub that caters to the undead. How am I supposed to compete with that?

Two Worlds II: Pirates of the Flying Fortress will be available in September.
