Pokémon Rules March 2011 NPDs

by Phil Kollar on Apr 14, 2011 at 01:15 PM

We've got the latest video game sales report from NPD, and in news that should surprise very few people, the Nintendo DS and the newly-launching Pokémon White and Black are the top sellers from March 2011.

According to NPD, if they were listing sales based on individual SKUs, Pokémon White would still be the best-selling, with Pokémon Black coming in third. Just Dance 2, Killzone 3, and Zumba Fitness all would have made a SKU-specific list, but since they were only on one platform, they aren't listed here. Kind of makes you wish the NPD was still publishing SKU-specific listings, huh?

Although no 3DS games cracked the top 10, the NPD notes that Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition was the best-selling 3DS launch game.

Here's the full list for March 2011:

1. Pokémon White (DS)
2. Pokémon Black (DS)
3. Homefront (360, PS3, PC)
4. Dragon Age II (360, PS3, PC)
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC)
6. LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (360, PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS, PSP, PC)
7. Crysis 2 (360, PS3, PC)
8. NBA 2K11 (360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP, PC)
9. MLB 11: The Show (PS3, PS2, PSP)
10. Fight Night Champion (360, PS3)

On the hardware side, NPD reports that the 3DS sold about 100,000 units less than the Nintendo DS did in its launch month of November 2004, but more 3DS launch software was sold. The 3DS also costs about $100 more than the original DS did at launch, meaning that the 3DS has actually created greater revenue than the DS.

The original DS was actually the best-selling hardware in March (thanks again to Pokémon, I assume), but the PS3, Xbox 360, and PSP all sold more units than last March.
