Capcom Confirms New Team-Based Resident Evil Title

by Meagan Marie on Mar 28, 2011 at 03:53 AM

Capcom has officially confirmed the squad-based Resident Evil title reported on last week as Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

Raccoon City is the result of a partnership between Capcom and Slant 6 Games (SOCOM: Confrontation, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3), and takes the franchise in an entirely new direction. A third person team-based shooter, the game will reinterpret events established in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, pitting players against an opposing government squad, zombies, and bio-organic weapons.

“It is September 1998 and the action centers once more on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak from the Umbrella facility," reads the press release. "With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Hearing of this plan, the US Government dispatches its own special forces to uncover any evidence that exposes the cause of the viral infection and Umbrella’s actions. Players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier (U.S.S.), competing alone or in four player co-op in a battle against all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.”

Promised are the return of familiar faces and iconic locations. The Raccoon City Police Department and Leon Kennedy are called out as examples. You won’t be playing as Kennedy, however. You’ll be tasked with eliminating him.

Operation Raccoon City will include online multiplayer modes, each capitalizing on the unique triple-tiered combat between the Umbrella Security Service, U.S. Special Ops, and the undead. The title is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and is slated to release this winter.

In a side bit of news, Capcom also confirmed that the Nintendo 3DS title Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will include a playable demo of Resident Evil Revelations. More about Revelations will be revealed at E3 in June.

The drastic new direction has been confirmed. How do you feel about Capcom messing with Resident Evil's canon? Are you excited about a fresh take on the franchise? Or do you feel that plot points of newer games make the outcome predetermined?
