So Catherine Looks Insane, But How Does It Actually Play?

by Phil Kollar on Dec 10, 2010 at 07:20 AM

I've been championing Catherine, the upcoming Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 horror-adventure game from Atlus, for months based on its quirky style and the pedigree of its development team alone. But one question everyone has wondered, myself included, is how the game actually plays. What does gameplay in Catherine consist of outside of the beautifully animated cut scenes? Thanks to a new preview in Famitsu, we finally have some answers.

The action component of Catherine will take place during nightmare sequences when main character Vincent falls asleep and is chased by horrific creatures like the one featured above. During these parts, Vincent will need to push blocks around to navigate the environment and create a staircase leading to the exit.

Block-pushing puzzles may not sound like the most engaging gameplay, but numerous dangers await Vincent in his attempt to escape, including special trap blocks, risk of falling, and a hard time limit. He'll also encounter sheep men, other trapped dreamers, who can pass on important information.

According to Famitsu, the game will also include Xbox Live/PlayStation Network support of some sort. Andriasang has the full report on the Famitsu piece, so head over there to get every last detail.
