Universal Music Shuts Down Pixel Force: DJ Hero

by Matt Helgeson on Dec 07, 2010 at 09:23 AM

Sadly, it looks like Eric Ruth Games' recently released 8-bit inspired remake of DJ Hero, entitled Pixel Force: DJ Hero, has been taken down. This news comes from Eric Ruth's Twitter account, where the indie developer writes:

"Pixel Force: DJ Hero has been removed due to a C&D [cease and desist - Ed.] from Universal Music Group. Big Companies with too much money can suck it."

While it appears Activision has no problems with the title, Universal Music obviously took offense that Ruth had made chiptune mash-ups of songs that it holds the publishing rights to. We went to Eric Ruth Games' wesbite and -- although Pixel Force: DJ Hero is still listed in the game directory -- the download link is dead. It looks like Universal can't stand copyright infringement -- even when Ruth was not actually making any money off the game. Lame. Hopefully, copies of the title are still floating around out there on the Internet, because this is a really clever bit of game development.
