Duke Nukem 3D Fan Remake In The Works, Approved By Gearbox

by Phil Kollar on Oct 14, 2010 at 01:00 PM

If you thought the wait for Duke Nukem Forever was killer, you haven't seen anything yet. Yesterday, a group of Duke fans announced that they will be working on a reimagining of Duke Nukem 3D using the Unreal Engine 3. Titled Duke Nukem: Next Gen, the project has even received an official blessing from the current official Duke Nukem developers at Gearbox.

You can get all the details on a post on the Duke Nukem forums. It sounds like they're planning a full conversion of the original game, including the three single-player episodes and a multiplayer mode. The people in charge of the project wisely got in touch with Gearbox before announcing it, and have received a personal non-commercial license to use the Duke Nukem character. In other words, as long as they aren't trying to make money off the project, they're in the clear.

The team of fans is looking for more people interested in volunteering on the project, so if you love Duke and have some experience making games, check it out.

As for when you can expect to actually play Duke Nukem: Next Gen, the team is sticking with the 3D Realms classic response: "when it's done." That said, they promise that milestone tests will be open to the community, and a planned multiplayer demo release date is "sooner than you think."

To help ease the wait, check out the first video of the fan project in action below.
