Ubisoft just gave us a first look at Driver: San Francisco. Series creator and current creative director Martin Edmonson says that Driver is back in terms of the core gameplay elements. You once again take the role of undercover cop Tanner and his partner Tobias Jones. Crime lord Jericho also returns, and the story picks up after Jericho shoots Tanner in Istanbul.

Bringing Driver back to the famous car chase city was a decision made to capture the adrenaline rush of a real car chase, using the dynamic hills and varying urban terrain native to the city. This will also be the first Driver to feature real cars – over 100 – all of which take damage.

One of the more interesting elements is the ability to “shift.” Ubisoft didn’t get into the details, but Tanner now has the ability to shift between cars at will. Keep in mind that he just had a recent near-death experience. The ability is at the core of the game and becomes stronger – allowing you to select from cars further away or drivers with more willpower – as Tanner becomes a better driver.

We’ve got a full preview of Driver: San Francisco coming up later tonight. Check back then for more details.
