Guitar Hero, Farmville Headed To iPhone Along With Gyroscope

by Phil Kollar on Jun 07, 2010 at 11:04 AM

Apple's annual WWDC (Worldwide Developer's Conference) kicked off today as usual with a keynote from Apple CEO Steve Jobs wherein he unveiled the iPhone 4. The new gadget has at least one new feature that will theoretically matter to gamers: a gyroscope. Along with that upgrade, Apple showed off several upcoming game apps that they hope will appeal to gamers.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus kicked things off by announcing a new Farmville app for iPhone that will actually send you reminders every time your crops need tending to. Hope you're ready to be woken up at all hours of the night to do virtual chores! Farmville for iPhone is expected to be out by the end of June.

For the more music-minded gamers in the audience, Activision then revealed a new Guitar Hero app for the iPhone. This product was actually released today immediately after the keynote for a mere $2.99, but it only comes with six songs:

-"We Are The Champions" by Queen
-"Savior" by Rise Against
-"Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones
-"Cousins" by Vampire Weekend
-"Say It Ain't So" by Weezer
-"Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes

If you want more music, you'll need to purchase three-song packs for $1.99 a piece, but hey, at least the app has launched with a bunch of song packs already available.

If a Facebook game and barebones rhythm title aren't providing enough gaming on your iPhone, you may want to consider picking up the iPhone 4, which will pack in a whole bunch more potential with the inclusion of a gyroscope in addition the accelerometer already in older iPhone models. Games on iPhone 4 will be able to implement full 3D motion support for "six-axis motion sensing," which Jobs called "perfect for gaming."

Jobs demonstrated the new capabilities with a Jenga-style block game, but no other apps with gyroscope use were shown. Here's hoping they're coming soon...and that they're a little more exciting than Guitar Hero and Farmville.
