SOE Taking Applications For Annual G.I.R.L. Scholarship

by Meagan Marie on Jan 20, 2010 at 03:26 AM

If you happen to be of the female persuasion and are attending school for game design, Sony Online Entertainment wants your attention. SOE just announced the commencement of their 2010 G.I.R.L. (Gamers In Real Life) Scholarship program, aimed to educate and recruit women into game production and design.

“The past two G.I.R.L. Scholarship recipients were such a valued addition to our team that we are thrilled to offer this program for the third consecutive year,” said Laura Naviaux, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. “Our goal is to continue to encourage and reward women who share our commitment and passion for developing cutting edge online games for all demographic groups.”

The most obvious participation requirement is that you must be female, and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program related to video games. Eligible tracks include video game art, design, animation, production, programming or visual effects. Also, you must not be slated to graduate before the end of the 2011 spring term. The submission process includes completing an online application and attaching a piece of existing art. Two semifinalists will be chosen from this process, and two additional pieces of concept art and an essay will determine the winner. Applications must be in before February 15. The winner will be announced in late May.

So what prize will the lucky lady nab? The qualified recipient will receive $10,000 to be put toward tuition and other related expenses. Additionally, she will earn a chance to intern for up to 10 weeks at one of SOE’s participating studios. While room, board, transportation, and living expenses aren’t covered for this portion of the prize, the opportunity to get your hands dirty in an actual studio prior to graduation is invaluable.
