Replay – Banjo-Tooie

by Andrew Reiner on Oct 28, 2014 at 07:24 AM

On this episode of Replay, we dive back into Rare's impressive library of games on Nintendo 64. Having looked at Banjo-Kazooie two years ago, we figured it was time to see how its sprawling sequel holds up. I was fortunate enough to review the game back in the day, giving it a 9 out of 10 and saying, "The sequel is still a 3D platformer at heart, but the boundaries have been removed, which makes it more like Zelda than anything else. The new worlds are gigantic, spanning as far as the eye can see. While there are noticeable separations between zones, Rare tried to deliver the impression that everything is connected, like pieces in a puzzle. If you enjoyed Banjo-Kazooie, there's a good chance you won't like this sequel. You'll oftentimes find yourself stuck with no idea what to do next, and exploration highlight outweighs the action." But once I found my way in this world, it delivered plenty of great content, including the ability to transform into a wide variety of things, including appliances.

Kim Wallace, Tim Turi, Ben Reeves, and I discuss this strange facet of the game in this week's episode, and experience firsthand just how confusing the overworld can be. Platforming maestro Tim does his best to see as much of this sequel as possible, but all of our focus is jarred by a story point involving Bottles. We hope you enjoy this episode, and make sure you stick around for the second segment, which shows off another great duo.
