Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Can't Be Re-Released Without EA's Approval

by Imran Khan on Sep 12, 2018 at 02:25 PM

A few days ago, it was announced that THQ Nordic has picked up the Kingdoms of Amalur property, a series produced by former pitcher Curt Schilling's now-defunct 38 Studios. The studio only produced one game in the series, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, an action RPG published under the EA Partners program and designed to set the stage for a MMORPG set in the same universe down the line.

When THQ Nordic grabbed the IP, most people assumed that meant an HD remaster of Reckoning, as has been the company's modus operandi with their IP excavations so far. It turns out it's not that simple, according to a quote from THQ Nordic to Eurogamer.

"At this stage we 'only' acquired the intellectual property," THQ Nordic told Eurogamer. "Given our track record, we know what the burning questions (remaster, remake, port to current-gen systems etc.) are, but we decided do [sic] not answer those specifically as we tend to put our heads together first and then do our homework, and only start to talk about anything once we feel confident and very familiar with the franchise."

Or, to put it more simply, "EA still has the publishing rights to Reckoning," the company said.

This is likely a bummer to anyone who expected Reckoning HD soon, but THQ Nordic did say they would be looking into it, and suggested they will be talking to EA about publishing rights soon.

It honestly doesn't seem like THQ knows what they plan to do with the property they bought yet. They seemingly got access to what remains of the failed Amalur MMORPG project, but who knows if they plan to revive that. It could be a Darksiders III situation where they plan to work on new games in the series rather than only look backwards.
