Nintendo Details Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Assorted Online Modes

by Kyle Hilliard on Nov 01, 2018 at 09:23 AM

As part of this morning's Super Smash Bros.-focused Nintendo Direct, director Masahiro Sakurai detailed the game's assorted online modes.

The game can be played locally, wirelessly with up to four Switches. For online Sakurai recommends playing with a wired connection.

You will be able to set preferred rules and the game will match you to players who want to play with similar rules. It will prioritize geographic proximity over preferred rules compatibility.

You will have a Global Smash Power (GPS) score that will dictate your ranking. The number will change depending on how many people are playing Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If you're good enough you can participate in Elite Battles.

You can make a personalized Smash Tag that will be collected by those who defeat you. The more you win, the more Smash Tags you will have. You will also be able to set quick-select messages to send to people.

While you're waiting for online matches to start, you will be able to play some other modes and you will be alerted when a match is available.

The Battle Arena will let you set up a room to play with friends. You can watch people play, or place a token somewhere to make sure you're up next.

The Switch Online app will allow you voice chat and in 2019, a dedicated Smash app will let you share screenshots and video clips easily.
