Realmforge Studios will be launching Dungeons 2 in 2015. At Gamescom 2014, I checked out a hands-off demo that showcased the PC title. If you’re one of those players that loved Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2 and were irked at the recent microtransaction-laden mobile offering in the franchise, you’re in for a treat. Dungeons 2 takes many of the mechanics that made the Dungeon Keeper series great and adds some new layers to the formula.
You’ll summon up a horde of goblins, orcs, snots, (the peon-style laborers), naga, and more. You’ll slap your minions to make them work harder! You’ll dig out gold veins and set up special rooms to collect mana, as well as build out empty chambers to become various dungeon rooms like hospitals or workshops. You’ll build traps to protect your minions from invading humans and other nasty creatures like spiders. You’ll pick up your minions and fling them around! And of course, you’ll need plenty of beer and gold to keep your denizens happy as you move around the dungeon completing quests and discovering surprises.
Dungeons 2 features two playable factions, so you will have several different ways to build your stronghold. Multiplayer mode is perfect for playing with friends and supports up to 4 players.
Here’s a twist - In Dungeons 2, building up your dungeon is only half the battle. Once you’ve built up a force and conquered the underground, it’s time to find the portal leading up to the overworld and send your minions out to crush the forces of good. Once your units are in the overworld, the gameplay leaves sim-dungeon and turns into something more akin to a classical RTS game.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Dungeons 2 as we inch closer to 2015.
