Updates to fighting games usually generate the same question: What’s different? More specifically, people want to hear the numbers. The updated version of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, is no different. Here you go: The game adds a dozen playable characters to the roster, 20 brand-new stages, and tweaks to the overall game. Capcom revealed a pair of characters at Gamescom, and we got to see them in action.

Nemesis is making his way out of the Resident Evil universe to the world of fighting games. This hulking beast wears his trademark black overcoat and wields an impressively sized rocket launcher. He’s slow but strong. Capcom’s fighting game guru, Seth Killian, says that his tentacles and rocket launcher give him a decent amount range – critical for a character that’s not likely to break any land-speed records.

Marvel’s iconic sorcerer Dr. Strange is in the game, and he’s exceptionally powerful in UMvC 3. He’s able to launch portals that home in on enemies, and he can teleport away from danger. He can also drop orbs that redirect projectiles. When he faces enemy projectiles, one of his hyper moves creates a cylinder of energy that deflects and amplifies the projectile back at the attacker. Strange is a highly technical player well suited for players who enjoy setting up “Rube Goldberg devices of doom,” as Killian puts it.

Gameplay tweaks include a more refine X Factor system, which Killian says adds an additional layer of depth and strategy to the game. When you launch opponents in the air, different effects occur depending upon the direction you pick. Launch them up, and it greatly increases the amount of damage they’ll take. Launching them against a wall removes a bar of their super meter. If you launch them to the ground, you’ll be granted an additional bar of super meter.

The numbers are in place, the tweaks appear to be fairly significant, and the updated UI really sells the comic-book theme. If you didn’t pick up Marvel Vs. Capcom: Fate of Two Worlds back in February, your patience may pay off in a big way come November.
