More than 12 years after the release of the original Tropico, publisher Kalypso Media has announced that Tropico 5 is officially slated for some time next year. The newest entry to the long-running city-building series will release for Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Linux.

Kalypso stated that players will resume the role of El Presidente in Tropico 5, the absolute ruler of the island of Tropico from the last four games. It will be El Presidente’s job, once again, to balance the ever-changing needs of the populace and his governmental bodies as Tropico moves from early colonial times all the way through the 21st century.

For the first time in the history of the series, Tropico 5 will offer competitive and cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Multiplayer game types will allow players to either face off against each other or share resources.

We don’t have a more specific release date than 2014 as of now, but we do have a first teaser trailer, featuring El Presidente himself, below. The trailer seems to pay homage to Charlie Chaplin’s globe scene from The Great Dictator. Modern Times, an expansion for Tropico 4, is also the name of a 1936 Charlie Chaplin film.
