For the latest entry in its popular strategy series, Creative Assembly is staying in Roman times to pay homage to one of the most infamous rulers of the era.

Total War: Attila focuses on the legendary Hun leader, who proved to be one of the most formidable opponents for the Roman Empire. Yes, you could assume the role of this warrior, but you could also take up the other side and repel his advances as he attempts to overtake the crumbling Roman Empire. Creative Assembly refers to this as "survival strategy," as you will also face famines, plagues, and decaying public order.

“With Total War: Attila we will create a Total War game that will challenge and enthrall fans of the series,” says project lead Janos Gaspar in a press release. “We’re reintroducing some features that fans have been asking for, such as family trees and skill trees, and improving many of the core aspects of Total War we know are important to them. But to really bring the period to life, we’re building on these foundations with many new strategic features for them to consider, such as advanced street-fighting, civilians, complete settlement destruction and dynamic fire that can rage across a city as armies clash. We want to push players to the limits of their skill to survive against the odds, and to love every minute of it.”

To celebrate the announcement, Sega is making it free to try Total War: Rome II on Steam this weekend (read our review here). Total War: Attila is slated to release on PC and Mac some time in 2015.
