Crafting has been a staple of MMOs and the Elder Scrolls games for quite some time. The ability to create weapons and armor is both a boon to players who like to suit up before adventuring, or to shrewd homebodies who use their talents to amass small fortunes by selling their wares. A new developer walkthrough shows how blacksmithing works in The Elder Scrolls Online.

Not all crafting stations are created equally in The Elder Scrolls Online, unlike past Elder Scrolls games. Players who want to create particularly powerful gear or items in a set will have to discover special stations hidden deep within ruins. As the video shows, these ruins are often protected by fierce beasts and other hazards. Once inside, smiths can tackle these specialized pieces of equipment. Skilled characters have a greater chance of getting the most from their creations, though lower-level talents can give it a shot  – while running the risk of ruining their creation in the process.

For more information on the game, including our hands-on impressions, read our preview. Look for The Elder Scrolls Online on PC and Mac on April 4, and on the PS4 and Xbox One in June.
