The Dark Eye – Demonicon
Kalypso has released the first batch of screenshots for its upcoming action/RPG The Dark Eye – Demonicon, and they show a rich world full of promise for fans of European-style role-playing games.
Demonicon is set in The Dark Eye universe, a tabletop RPG property that has never approached Dungeons & Dragons in U.S. gaming despite its massive European popularity. TDE is a solid system for fantasy role-playing, though, and is not difficult to pick up for anyone with experience in the genre.
Demonicon follows two heroes who share a destiny and who will ultimately make choices that will shape the fate of an entire continent. The gameplay looks like a typical third-person fantasy action/RPG from the screens. I'll be going hands-on with it in Germany next week, so there should be actual details on the game then.
Kalypso's Drakensang: The Dark Eye, a third-person PC-only RPG based on the same property, seemingly came out of nowhere to impress critics and fans alike while introducing a wider U.S. audience to TDE in 2008. A different developer is behind Demonicon, though the game looks promising in its own right.
Demonicon is slated to come out for PC and consoles (Kalypso hasn't said which, but based on the company's history and current slate of products the smart money is on 360 but not PS3) next year.
