If you don’t know anything about Star Wars, you might assume that the latest Battlefront live action commercial is about people taking off their clothes. Thankfully, that’s not the message here.

The new ad is a callback to the scene in A New Hope in which Obi-Wan allows Darth Vader to “strike him down.” What follows is Obi-Wan disappearing, leaving his robes behind in a pile on the Death Star floor.

Unlike the last commercial, which evokes pure nostalgia, this one is a strange homage. I can’t imagine anyone imagines themselves making the ultimate sacrifice only to “respawn” as a snow trooper.

Star Wars Battlefront does a great job of capturing the nostalgia of the original trilogy. Unfortunately, this ad tries just a bit too hard.

This one’s a swing and a miss, EA. Thankfully, there's little risk that this ad is going to adversely impact EA's projection to ship 13 million copies of the game by March 31.
