Nintendo just wrapped up 33 minutes of Splatoon boot camp. The primer video introduces the concept of the Inkling characters, the goals of the multiplayer matches, and a variety of the weapons and customization options.

We’ve embedded the entire video below, but there are some highlights to point out. First, there is a demo available in the eShop now. The multiplayer test periods are detailed here.

We also learned that in the four-vs-four multiplayer, only two stages will be available to choose from at any given time. The selections rotate every four hours, so you’ll have plenty of practice on the maps available.

Nintendo is also planning post-launch content in the form five new maps and additional free stages throughout the summer. New weapons, modes, and gear will be added along the way, also. In August, additional friend-based matchmaking options will be patched in.

Players will be able to take a party of four online and match up against other parties. You’ll also be able to create parties of 8 and just play against your friends. In the second option, all stages will be available and rules are completely customizable.

Finally, there will be rare “Splatfests.” You’ll pick a side (the first one starting June 20 asks if you prefer cats or dogs), fight online, and possibly earn rewards. These include “super sea snails” that are used to add perk slots to gear.

Splatoon is out on May 29 for Wii U.
