Ask anyone who knows the Sniper Elite series what the first thing that comes to mind, and I suspect you'll get the same answer from most. The stealth series is known for its brutal X-ray kills that show the stark reality of what happens when a high-velocity projectile rips through the body.

Bones break, organs rupture, and players wince. This time out, Rebellion has added more of the vascular system, and the effect is more gruesome than ever.

But underneath the blood-soaked franchise is competent stealth, clever A.I., and attractive settings. The latest game in the series takes us to pre-war Italy and sports a number of features that add to and refine how the franchise works.

Rebellion says it is responding to feedback and the A.I. has been improved, with enemy soldiers reacting more realistically to bodies dropping around them. They'll also investigate corpses more reliably, but also will eventually avoid areas where the bodies pile up.

This gives players more tools to distract, lure, and eliminate foes. And if you manage to pull off a stealth attack, you might be treated to the newly added X-ray kills for them.

Sniper Elite 4 takes a page out of Splinter Cell's book, adding light-based stealth mechanics. Especially in night missions, you'll want to shoot out light sources to conceal your movement.

Long-range shooting has received an upgrade, also. You can now use your binoculars' distance readout to range shots. This allows you to tweak your crosshairs and helps account for bullet drop. If you range correctly, then your crosshair will be accurate even at distance.

One of the big enhancements in Sniper Elite 4 are the map sizes. The smallest environment is three times the size of Sniper Elite 3's largest. For multiplayer fans, the entire campaign supports two-player cooperative play, and traditional co-op and competitive modes will return.

Sniper Elite 4 will be out this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
