It's no secret that Volition's Red Faction series is mostly about breaking things, and it doesn't look as though Red Faction: Armageddon is going to be changing that formula. The studio and publisher THQ have released a trailer for the game's new ruin mode, which puts the storyline on hold, letting players focus on what matters most: pure destruction.

Ruin is similar to Red Faction: Guerilla's wrecking crew mode, giving players a time limit, a selection of weapons, and an area that's practically begging to be flattened. Your goal is to do it as efficiently as possible, with points awarded for creative use of the environment and for stringing together destructive combos. Once you're done, you can check out the leaderboards to see how your results stack up against your friends or the world at large. Check out the new trailer below for a look at the mode in action.

Red Faction: Armageddon takes place 50 years after the events of Guerilla. Players take on the role of Darius Mason, grandson of the previous game's Alec Mason. Mars is now free of the Ultor Corporation's influence, but colonists are now facing a more urgent threat underground. Survivors have moved below the planet's surface, accidentally awakening an alien presence in the process. Mason will have to deal with this new threat as well as the environment itself, which includes ice floes and lava.

Fortunately, Mason isn't going into battle underprepared. In addition to his trusty hammer, Mason has a new tool called the nano forge, which allows him to instantly repair structures. He also has an electromagnetic-powered gadget, which can be used to tether two objects or hurl them toward each other with terrifying force. Check out our previous preview for a closer look at the magnet gun.

Red Faction: Armageddon is due out May 31 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
