Konami has announced the acquisition of a new tournament license for its Pro Evolution Soccer series – Euro 2016. Next year's tournament won't be in PES 2016 at launch, with hints that it may be included in a standalone game.

The inclusion of Euro 2016 bolsters the franchise, which already has licenses for the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and numerous individual teams and kits.

Today's announcement does not outline the terms, and PES fans can only hope that Konami can nab the license again for 2020 and beyond.

Konami won't say how or when it'll be introduced for the series other than to say more info is coming early next year. The press release states: "UEFA Euro 2016 license will not be featured in PES 2016..." which seems to imply it won't be offered as DLC for 2016, but instead be a standalone game. However, we'll have to wait and see exactly what Konami has in mind.

The Euro 2016 tournament in France features national teams from all over Europe, and teams are currently in the qualifying stage. Group play followed by the knockout stages starts on June 10, 2016, with the final a month later on July 10.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 comes out on September 15 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
