The first Donkey Kong Country has its naysayers, and those people are not necessarily wrong. Compared to the best platformers of the day, its controls were too loose and the visuals were fairly muddy, even if it was impressive tech.

As much as I might be an apologist for the first game, though, Donkey Kong Country 2 is easily one of the more fun platformers of all time. Playing as both Diddy and Dixie is a delight in a way that Donkey simply was not. The level design was much more well thought out the second time around with varied and beautiful environments, animal mounts that were always fun to use, and a style that was core to its irreverent tone. Plus a soundtrack that is Rare in top form.

It took almost two decades for the series to reach these heights again (I'll get to that later), but it manages to escape the mountain of needless SNES-era platformers as one of the all-time greats.
