For years, Game Informer editors have wondered why no one was making a Dark Souls inspired shooter that tests your twitch skills with punishing difficulty. Now, a contender has finally stepped into the ring.

Today Toadman Interactive announced Immortal: Unchained, a third-person shooter that reinforces its gunplay with a robust action-RPG system. The story setup sounds boilerplate – the world is collapsing due to a cosmic event, and you are the "living weapon" tasked with stopping the cataclysm. Writers Anne Toole (The Witcher) and Adrian Vershinin (Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield: 1) are on board to drive the narrative.

Game designer Sebastian Thorwaldsson says Immortal: Unchained is far from a reflex shooter. "Mobility, attack direction and well-timed dodges are crucial for your survival and victory," he says. "Expect to get shot down a lot; just like its sources of inspiration, this isn’t an easy game. The satisfaction you feel when you evade an enemy attack to fire a burst of hot lead (or plasma, or acid, etc.) into its backside cortex and watch it go up in flames will make it worth it."

If you fall in battle, your weapons and items stay by your abandoned husk of a body, so you have to go back and face your tormentor once again if you want to recover your hard-won inventory.
