When I was a young child and played my NES on a small, flickery CRT, I inevitably kept some things by my side. I always had the latest issue of Nintendo Power. I adored the colorful game manuals. I never, ever played without a sketch pad for notes.

This came in most handy when I was playing The Legend of Zelda. Hastily drawing dungeon maps was an important part of my formative gaming experiences.

Gambrinous’ Guild of Dungeoneering evokes those memories by making the map creation an integral part of the game. And it does so with a pencil-and-paper aesthetic that reminds me of my youth.

The game is turn-based, but instead of playing as your hero, you construct the dungeon around him from a deck. You’ll also draw monsters, loot, and traps that you’ll need to place, but the hero quests through your creation independently.

You can check out early gameplay in the trailer above. Guild of Dungeoneering is on track for PC, Mac, and tablets later this year.
