17-Bit's top-down space shooter Galak-Z is a love letter to '80s Saturday morning cartoons and anime, but up until now, the developer has been keeping a major secret under wraps – your nimble ship can transform into a laser sword-wielding mech with the press of a button. Check out the video to see just how awesome the functionality is.

In hindsight, Galak-Z's mech mode makes perfect sense given the game's roots – what self-respecting anime-inspired shoot 'em up wouldn't let you transform into a towering robo-suit of doom? However, Mech mode is more than just a limited power-up; players can slip into the overpowered alternate form with the press of a button at any time. Once you've transformed, you have a whole new suite of abilities at your disposal, including the ability to dice enemies with your sword or grab and throw enemies with your extendable arm. Mech mode also gives players access to the Direction Shield, which can deflect incoming projectiles right back at attacking enemies. See the new abilities in action in the reveal trailer below:

Galak-Z launches on August 4 for PlayStation 4.
