Far Cry players usually walk away from the games with highlight reels of their favorite moments. Clearing out militant bases with help from the wildlife, infiltrating an enemy camp armed only with a knife and living to tell the tale, driving an explosives-laden jeep into a crowd of guards – these are just a few of the things you're likely to have done over the past few installments. As impressive as those experiences may be, one of the most interesting things about Far Cry as a series is how removed each entry is from the previous game. Aside from bringing players to a beautiful, dangerous world and setting them loose, all bets are off when it comes to characters and setting; don't expect any threads from entry to entry. That's especially evident with today's announcement of the new entry in the series, Far Cry Primal. If you grew attached to your gyrocopter in Far Cry 4, you're going to have to let it go. And forget about compound bows, vehicles, or even gunpowder. The series is going back in time – way back.

Far Cry Primal is set 12,000 years ago, when stone tools were the height of sophistication. You play as Takkar, a hunter who finds himself stranded in Oros. This glacial valley is flourishing after the most recent ice age, and it's home to a variety of hunters and their prey. We're talking mammoths, sabertooth tigers, bears, and other beasts – the line between hunter and hunted has never been blurrier in the series.

Players will have access to a variety of spears, clubs, axes, and bows, all of which must be crafted using resources that are scattered across the world. As you hunt and gather, Ubisoft says you'll build up your own tribe – a necessity, considering the importance of working as a group. Fire will also become an important tool, allowing you to push prey where you want them or to simply stay alive at night, when some of the most dangerous creatures are active.

Far Cry Primal is set to release February 23, 2016, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC release following in March. It's not coming to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
