Companions aren’t a new concept for Bethesda games or the Fallout series, but Fallout 4’s Dogmeat takes things in a new direction. Your faithful companion will be with you throughout (if you want him to be), which has design implications for the canine’s fortitude.

As Fallout 4’s game director Todd Howard points out in the video below, no one wants to lose Dogmeat. Instead, they are just likely to load up a save. For that reason, the pup can get knocked out, but not killed.

Bethesda also dropped off a clip with the real Dogmeat. This was first shown at QuakeCon. So unless you were there, this one will be new to you, too.

Fallout 4 will be out on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 10, 2015. For more on it, check out our extensive preview of the exclusive QuakeCon attendee footage.
