Dogfighting isn’t new to Elite Dangerous. As you’re cruising the galaxy, you can pick fights with NPCs and players at your leisure. Today, Frontier is giving scrappers a place to call their own.

The studio made a surprise announcement today that Elite Dangerous Arena, a new dogfighting standalone game, is available now. Four players will duke it out for supremacy across four arenas and eight modes.

Arena is an encapsulated version of the CQC mode baked into Elite Dangerous. Available for $7.49 as a standalone download or on Steam, it’s designed to give pilots a taste of the simulation flying.

For those that decide to move from Arena to the full game, you’ll receive a discount equal to your purchase price of the smaller game. Arena is cross-compatible with CQC mode in the full game, so there’s no reason to purchase the new version if you are already on board.

This spring, Frontier will kick off a $100,000 Close Quarter Combat competition. There will be a number of heats on the road to a grand final this summer.
