When From Software and Bandai Namco announced their shield creation contest, I never imagined that the submissions would be real, physical pieces of gear. The two newly announced in-game shields started life as just that, though.

The Phoenix Pharma is adapted from a design by Alexandre Etiennes Jonathan Du Cassé and forged by blacksmith Armédia. It was submitted under the name “Shield of Ash,” and carries the following description.

Greatshield of the King’s loyal knight Syan. The King commissioned this great shield specifically for his loyal knight, but Syan met his demise before its completion.

The second shield is the Sunlight Parma, designed by Denis Bachmater and forged by Armédia. It was submitted under the name “Sunlight Warrior Dark.”

A small shield depicting a hero of yore. Perhaps these famed champions are no more, or perhaps they have no desire to appear in public view. But their very absence has made tales of their brave deeds all the more alluring, and this shield memorializes one of their brethren.

There are three screenshots for each of the two shields below, as well as a close up of the real Phoenix Parma. You can also check out the first two fan-made shields that were recently revealed.

Dark Souls II arrives on March 11 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. You can read a hands-on preview from Tokyo Game Show for more information.
