Mixed martial arts have had a presence on consoles during this generation, with titles featuring fighters from UFC and Strikeforce. Due to the nature of MMA, the ground game has typically slowed down the fighting experience in these games. Publisher 345 Games and developer Kung Fu Factory (who also worked on Supremacy MMA) recognize this, and they want to boil the sport down to an arcade-like experience with their recently-announced Bellator: MMA Onslaught.

Kung Fu Factory doesn't want to the game to be as over-the-top as other arcade sports titles like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz, however, so don't expect any fireballs or ultra attacks. Instead, the streamlined control scheme has face buttons managing your strikes and the right stick managing submissions and ground positioning. You won't need to worry about intricate right stick motions for moves, as quick taps will suffice in MMA Onslaught. I had a chance to play a quick round, and the fast-paced combat felt responsive and natural. No lengthy tutorials will be required, as a basic rundown of the controls and a round or two of practice should be plenty enough to prepare players.

MMA Onslaught will feature online multiplayer, complete with a ranking system that's similar to the one seen in Street Fighter IV. All of the eight real-life fighters are selectable in player matches, but ranked bouts will require a created character. XP can be earned for your character in every mode, allowing you to upgrade your stats in the areas you want to focus on.

No release date has been announced, but 345 Games is hoping to bring the arcade-like combat of Bellator: MMA Onslaught to XBLA and PSN this summer.
