Assassins have been equipped with hidden blades since the outset of the Assassin's Creed series, but the devices have evolved over time. Most notably, initiates no longer have to remove a finger before strapping it on. Assassin's Creed Unity offers perhaps the biggest technological breakthrough for the order's signature weapon, the result of which is called the Phantom Blade. This new gadget allows Assassins to do their ordinary up-close work, as well as deal with enemies silently from afar.

As highlighted in a post on the Ubisoft Blog, the Phantom Blade cleverly gives players to use hidden blades as projectiles. Think of the weapon as a wrist-mounted crossbow, only with versatile bolts that can be used as daggers as well as silently fired at enemies.

If you like what you see, you can buy your own replica from McFarlane Toys. It fires soft darts, and you can preorder the $59.99 reproduction here. It's featured in a newly released video, where parkour experts in costume tear through the streets of Paris.

For more on the game itself, take a look at this recent video, which highlights Assassin's Creed Unity and its Anvil Engine.

Assassin's Creed Unity is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on Oct. 28.
