Check Out Magic: The Gathering's Liliana, the Necromancer

Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2019 releases on July 13, and is poised to be a set full of accessible experiences for newcomers. However, it also includes a key infusion of cards for veteran players and competitive formats.

Wizards of the Coast is releasing special Planeswalker Decks that feature cards that won't be available in the Core Set - perfect for players who are just starting with the game and want to align themselves with one of Magic's five flavorful colors. All the cards we discuss here today are available only in the black Core Set 2019 Planeswalker Deck!

Today, let's meet one of the major Magic planeswalkers (that definitely wasn't leaked on the internets before today!) as we've never seen her before, a sort of mishmash of abilities from previous incarnations that should be easy for new players to understand and use. Check out Liliana, the Necromancer!

This version of Liliana is available as a guaranteed card from the new black Core Set 2019 Planeswalker Deck. Each color's deck features a headlining planeswalker associated with their color.  But wait, there's more!

Liliana may be interesting by herself, but she also has dark minions ready to join her cause. Arisen Gorgon is a decent 3/3 drop for 3, but if you have any version of Liliana on your side of the board, the solid creature also boasts deathtouch, ready to stone gaze down anything that gets in its way. A nice touch for when you need to take on a giant wurm or rampaging ogre!

We still need a little more Liliana flavor, so let's look at one more card that suits her ambitions:

With Liliana's Spoils, you get the best of both worlds. Not only will your opponent lose a card, but you get to dig into your deck to find whatever's needed at the moment. A big creature, a removal spell, or even Liliana herself! Unlike many other hand destruction spells, Spoils is still useful during a topdeck stalemate situation.

Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2019 lands on July 13, with prerelease events running on July 7-8.
